"Being familiar with best practices does not guarantee safety, as well as HAZWOPER training, and is not a one-time requirement. Familiarity can lead to complacency..."

Hello, everyone. It's Michelle Smith here from Blackline Safety. I'm the area manager for the north of the UK.
Now today, I'm coming on here because I just wanna discuss, well, actually tackle actually a sneaky little monster that's lurking out in manufacturing plants. Now that would be complacency. It's that feeling that you've been doing the same job for so long, you could probably do it with your eyes closed. And trust me, do we do not want that?
Now picture this, you've been at your, your station or your job for five years, and one day you think, hey, I know this machine so well, I could probably moonwalk while operating this thing. Now that is when complacency starts playing tricks on us. It whispers sweet nothings like, why bother checking that last weld? It looks fine. Spoiler alert, it probably doesn't.
The real danger here is that complacency can turn our well oiled machine into a well oiled mess. You know the kind of mess that ends up with someone in a safety meeting saying, remember that time that Gerry decided to multitask while operating the press? Yes, Gerry, we all remember.
So let's talk about safety for a moment. When we get too comfortable we start cutting corners. Who needs a hard hat? I've only dropped one thing this week. Now next thing you know you're getting a haircut from a fifty pound metal object.
How do we fight complacency at this point?
So first, let's consider injecting some fun back into our routines. Challenge yourself to learn. Learn something new. Maybe every day, maybe every week. Also encourage an open communication. If you notice someone drifting into the complacency zone gently remind them that the last time we ignored a problem we ended up with that infamous mystery goo incident and let's not revisit that.
So in conclusion, complacency might feel cosy but it can lead to safety hazards, reduced productivity, and memorable tales that we'd rather forget. So let's stay alert, keep pushing ourselves, and maybe even throw in a dance move or two on our daily routines.
Thank you.
