Today, I want to talk to you about gamma radiation and essential safety practices for workers and emergency responders.
Gamma radiation is an invisible and powerful form of energy and can penetrate deep into surfaces like the human skin. Like alpha and beta particles, gamma rays are hazardous if not properly managed. It poses a significant risk and includes radiation sickness, cancer, and even death when there's a high exposure.
How can you stay safe around gamma radiation? I want you to remember these essential principles, time, distance, and shielding.
First, minimize the time you spend in your radiation source. The less time you're exposed, the lower the risk. Second, keep a safe distance. The farther you are from the source, the weaker the radiation effect. Lastly, use proper shielding. Wearing the right PPEs can help you block gamma and protect.
As a responder, if you ever encounter gamma radiation, follow the alarm response guide. Detect, verify, locate, and measure.
First, detect the presence of radiation with an area monitoring device, then verify the reading for its accuracy. Next, pinpoint the source by using a PRD, and finally, measure the radiation levels to understand the risk and take appropriate action.
